Cultural Competence in Dental Practice: Building Trust, Enhancing Communication, and Improving Patient Outcomes

The demographic landscape of the United States continues to evolve, with minority populations—racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural—representing an ever-increasing percentage of dental patients. Yet these same communities often experience higher rates of untreated dental disease, less access to preventive services, and diminished trust in healthcare providers. Cultural competence has emerged as an essential framework to mitigate these disparities while simultaneously enhancing the quality of care for all patients.

This Viva Learning continuing education activity explores the foundations of cultural competence in dentistry and outlines cultural competence’s relationship to cultural humility, while providing actionable strategies that dental professionals can implement to create more inclusive, empathetic, and success-driven practice environments. Beyond ethical imperatives, culturally competent care yields tangible practice benefits: improved patient communication, increased comfort and satisfaction, stronger patient-provider relationships, and ultimately, enhanced patient retention.

This Viva Learning 2-hour/2 CE credit class can be applied towards any state dental board's CE requirement for dental continuing education training on the topic of Cultural Competence in dentistry . Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington have enacted state-level CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services) legislation requiring cultural competence training for health care providers. 26+ additional states have proposed CLAS legislation, including further expansions in California, Connecticut, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington. Please check with your individual state dental board to confirm that this Viva Learning CE class fulfills your state's particular requirement on this topic.

Upon completion of this Viva Learning CE activity, the dental professional will be able to:
• Define cultural competence and understand how it raises the level of patient-centered dental care.
• Understand how improving skills related to cultural competence can improve communications, enhance patient-provider trust, and increase patient satisfaction and retention.
• Improve interactions with patients by becoming more aware and empathetic about speech and behavior towards patients.
• Implement strategies in their own practice to enhance cultural competence.   ( disclaimer, bio and commercial disclosure )
